On June 26, the International Criminal Court (ICC) convicted Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud on several counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including for contributing to the crime against humanity of persecution on grounds of religion perpetrated by members of the armed groups of Ansar Dine and Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.
Justice Rapid Response (JRR) will keep closely following the developments in this case and pay close attention to the actions the ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor may take, including in relation to the gender persecution charge.
Demonstrating our longstanding support to the justice and accountability efforts in relation to this case, JRR deployed in 2014 a Sexual and Gender-based Crimes Investigator to support the work of the ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor, contributing to the ICC’s first confirmation of the charge of gender-based persecution.
JRR will remain a steadfast ally of the ICC and continue to provide highly technical support when needed to promote the rights and access to justice of victims and survivors.
