One Step Closer to Justice for Victims & Survivors in JEP’s macro-case 03
In July, the Truth Recognition Section of the Jurisdicción Especial para la Paz (JEP) held its first Public Verification Hearing in the trial phase of subcase Costa Caribe under the JEP’s macro-case 03, which relates to the infamous “false positives” cases: murders and forced disappearances committed by the Colombian military that were falsely presented as combat casualties of guerrilla members in the 2000’s.
During the proceedings, the 12 defendants determined to be those with the highest level of responsibility in relation to the crimes at stake reported on the actions they took to implement the hashtag restorative projects to which the they were sentenced to contribute to repairing the damage they caused.
Justice Rapid Response (JRR) has supported extensively the JEP in relation to its work on the subcase Costa Caribe under its macro-case 3 by providing Legal and Psychosocial Support expertise to further promote the rights and access to hashtag justice of Colombian victims and survivors.
A key aspect of JRR’s expert deployments was to help the JEP fully assess the damages caused to victims and hashtag survivors and to ensure it could gather insights from victims to inform its decision on possible restorative sanctions that could be pronounced against perpetrators, a type of sanction designed in partnership with survivors with the aim to effectively hashtag repair the harm caused.
